STUDENTS SPONSOR The pupils of the new Wellington C. Mepham High School marched to the auditorium for the first time, on the occasion of the student dedication held Friday morning, September 24, with Mr. Sanford H. Calhoun, Supervising Principal, presiding. After an impressive entrance, the school band, organized almost one year ago, opened the ceremony with the playing of "The Star Spangled Banner". To celebrate this occasion they wore, for the first time, their new garnet and gray uniforms. Mr. Calhoun spoke, recalling the band's inception one year ago, and touching upon the milestones in its career. The next musical selection was the "Mepham March," written and directed by Mr. George L. Pritchard and dedicated to Mr. Wellington C. Mepham, district superintendent. Wilma M. Bahnsen a junior, then presented a plaque which was the gift of the student body and faculty. At the close of her speech, turning to Mr. Mepham, she said, "With this token, the faculty and student body of Wellington C. Mepham High School consecrate themselves to the task of aspiring to every ideal and fulfilling every hope which, during your years as an educator, you have visualized for the students and faculties whose fate you guided. May the institution which bears your name ever maintain this pledge: "'To Wellington C. Mepham, through whose keen foresight, unfailing perseverance, and wise guidance this central high school has been established, we, the faculty and students, humbly and sincerely dedicate our efforts that we may advance the ideals which he has so deeply inspired.'" Mr. Mepham responded, but apparently was too touched to say more than a few words of sincere appreciation. Mr. Walter Swenson, vice-president of the Board of Education, accepted the gift on behalf of the Board. MEMORIAL FLAGPOLE DEDICATED The Walter E. Brockman Memorial Flagpole, presented to the high school by the Bellmore American Legion Post, No 948 was dedicated, November 11, 1937. Various civic groups formed at the Legion clubhouse at and marched to the high school for the dedication ceremony. These are two exerpts from autumn 1937 issues of the Buccaneer. |
